SAFREA Gauteng region networking meeting , 19 May 2009, Johannesburg

Florence Kiff: Guest Speaker,

Summary
The NGO sector is a relatively unknown (and undervalued) market for many communication freelancers. The sector is stuck with a small group of freelancers who are often overstretched. Good freelancers are missing huge opportunities in a large and lucrative sector.

[A summary of a presentation by Florence Kiff. She is a communications specialist with 12 years commercial experience (newspaper and magazine publishing; travel print and on-line marketing) and 9 years of non-profit management communications. Florence has a BA degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of the Witwatersrand (under tutorage of the late David Webster) and an MA (Econ) in Social Anthropology from the University of Manchester, with a focus on social networking in the informal sector.
In 2000, she joined ACORD (Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development) in London as Communications Manager. She then moved to CIVICUS, a global alliance of civil society organsiations with over 600 members in 100 countries, based in Johannesburg where she worked as Communications and Membership Manager.
In 2005 she joined ActionAid, an international development agency working to end poverty in 50 countries worldwide, where she started as International Publications Coordinator. She is currently Head of Internal Communications. Florence is part Dutch, Swiss and South African. She was born in The Hague and grew up in Abidjan, Calcutta, New Delhi, Singapore, Zurich and Geneva. ]
