Freelancing is much bigger than an opt-out – or forced choice. It’s the most fundamental shift in work since the Industrial Revolution. Freelancers must move quickly to protect it, otherwise we will continue being battered to the bottom of the earnings ladder.
Most countries – not just South Africa – are rapidly adopting the freelance or independent contractor model. In a sense, we’re reverting back to pre-industrial cottage industry, but in a hyperconnected global village in which freelancers can – and do - work for anyone.
When: Saturday 4 March, 12pm to 1.30pm Where: The Graft Yard, Heathway Centre, Shop 1048A, Cnr Castle Hill & Beyers Naude Drive, Blackheath Map: http://www.thegraftyard.com/contact-us Cost: No charge for Safrea members, R50 for non-members and R20 for full-time students (payment in cash at the door) RSVP: firstname.lastname@example.org

At the tender age of 19 years, Clive went into retirement. Not officially though. On a whim, he joined SAA as an air steward and spent the 1980s and his 20s flying about. Crewing could be brutal, but was delightfully interspersed with fascinating cultures, galleries, museums, music festivals - and the occasional pub…
After a confrontation with SAA management, Clive became a trade union shop steward, until the union and SAA both decided Clive was too much for the workers, and “voluntarily” retrenched him.
After disposing of his retrenchment package and home by opening a restaurant/bistro in the wrong part of Johannesburg at exactly the wrong time, Clive’s retirement was over…
In 1996, Clive launched as a newbie freelance copywriter into the unsuspecting worlds of advertising and marketing. Somehow, he survived and after years writing anything legal for cash (and offering to write anything illegal for more cash), he found his niche as a writer of company annual reports and business proposals.
Over the past 21 years Clive has worked with many leading design agencies and JSE listed companies. Having steeped himself in the global integrated (IIRC) and sustainability reporting (GRI) standards, Clive guides corporations how to update their reporting processes and disclose the impacts of their activities on the environment and society.
