The Safrean: Bringing You the Latest News in
Southern African freelancing

Dear Safreans,

I have to say I'm feeling pretty proud to have my name next to SAFREA these days. I hope you are too. With our new logo and updated website, we're working hard to bring our organisation into the limelight. We want to make SAFREA the first place South African media freelancers turn for advocacy and support. With your help, we're growing SAFREA into an association of the future. So, please, share regional and national events with your friends and colleagues!

Remember, SAFREA is run by volunteers, and we're always interested in finding ways to improve what we do. Please get in touch with us if you have comments or questions – we take all of our members' input seriously.

In the meantime, have a look at the great highlights we're sharing below. And in light of the ongoing debate about fair wages for freelancers in South Africa, I'm sharing our recent press release on the subject. Believe me, this story doesn't end here. We're putting together some insightful pieces we hope you'll look forward to reading.

Here's to a productive month for all our freelance members!

Not sure if you've noticed, but we've had a lot going on recently. Here's a quick look back at a very productive month.
  • Helen Ueckermann was featured on Die Groot television, and its associated radio shows to speak about the freelance industry in South Africa.

Whether you were able to tune in or not, here's the link to member Helen's SAFREAprofile – she's certainly someone worth keeping an eye on. We'll also be posting the link to her interview on Google Groups and the SAFREA website as soon as it's available.
  • The Western Cape regional committee held an event featuring iconic South African activist and co-founder of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Zachie Achmat.

The event was a major success. Read all about it, and learn how you can attend the next one, here
  • We launched our new website and logo!

We're just going to leave this right here. Thanks to Laura Rawden, Wayne Banks and everyone else who made this thing happen. Pat on the back to y'all! With such a sleek new design, it's the perfect time to connect with the national SAFREA page over social media. Let your neighbours and colleagues know you take pride in being part of something great!
  • SAFREA Stands Beside SALC in a Commitment to Support Journalists' Freedom of Expression.

You can read the full joint civil society statement here.

Look out for more news and updates on the SAFREA website and social media outlets.

This month, we're featuring Laura Dubber, freelance editor, writer, copywriter and social media expert.
