MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR

Dear Safreans,

Can you believe it's already February 2017? In the mad rush that is the first few weeks of the new year, I encourage you to take a few minutes to enjoy being a freelance media professional. Even if it's just one project a month that gets you smiling - take it on. Let it remind you why you got into the industry in the first place.

Like everyone else, SAFREA has had a busy start to the year. Our first annual Freelance Media Industry and Rates Report has received quite a bit of media coverage. And thanks to you, it's been shared across multiple social media platforms. Not only does this report give us the opportunity to talk about SAFREA, but it also draws attention to the realities of being in this business.

If you haven't read the full report, you can check out the press release plus all the great coverage we've received via BizCommunity, Media Update, SAFM and The Marketing Site to name a few, in our SAFREA in the News

Lastly, if you're a student member of SAFREA, please take a moment to fill out this survey, here. Your answers will help us gain valuable insights as to what you expect from SAFREA and how we can best assist you. Deadline is this Friday (10 February) so please do it today!

Looking ahead to the rest of this year, we hope to continue getting the SAFREA name out there, to bring in new members and to support the freelance industry. That said we want to say thanks to you - we appreciate all that you do as members to make SAFREA a great organisation.

Here's to a productive and enjoyable month!

Kindly,
Laura

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

This month, we're featuring Nyakallo Makgoba, graphic designer, illustrator, photographer, photojournalist and social media expert. Nyakallo is using his formal education, along with his personal views and experiences in South Africa's young democracy, to shape his passion for photography. Nyakallo writes on his profile: "But through art all that we’ve accumulated during our many (or few) years alive can be shared, allowing the artificial divides of race, gender and wealth to fall away."

Read more about Nyakallo, and find the link to his design venture as well as his contact details by visiting his SAFREA profile, here.

Did you know that as a spotlighted member, Nyakallo will now be featured on all of SAFREA's social media platforms. How great is that? What a way to get exposure as a freelancer!

It's about time you ask yourself: how's my profile looking?

FREELANCING TIP OF THE MONTH

At SAFREA, we're always on the lookout for time-saving tricks and business insights to help our members take their careers to the next level.

We all want to be associated with a reliable, accredited organisation, so it’s our goal to make sure your name stands out. That means, giving you the tools you need to succeed.

This month, we look at a great way for you to boost your freelancing income:

Check out Fiverr.com!

"Fiverr is the world's largest freelance services marketplace." If you offer a digital skill, go ahead and market it on Fiverr. While jobs start at $5 a gig, there's no limit to how much business you can attract using this great platform. It takes hard work and commitment, but once you fine tune your area of expertise and get going with a few clients, you'll be surprised by how much work comes your way.

But don't take our word for it, check out this recent Forbes article on how Fiverr freelancers are raking in the big bucks, here
