The name is Sungula. But, in order to avoid all the cringe-inflicting pronunciations of my name, just refer to me as SG.
I studied economics and finance at the University of Cape Town, but it wasn't until the final year that I realised I was deeply infatuated with the written word. Anything and everything that involved paragraphs and punctuation became a perfectionist's obsession.
In the year after graduating - while doing economics honours through UNISA - my essay was selected as one of the top 20 postgraduate submissions for the Old Mutual and Nedbank National Budget Speech Competition. That was 2010. In the same year, I was chosen from a pool of a thousand applicants as one of nine Independent Newspapers Cadets.
During the programme, I learned all the basics of journalism and added a few writing tricks to my repertoire. I have since adopted a unique yet malleable writing style which has only become better with time. I have been published in the Cape Times, Cape Argus, Pretoria News, Mercury and, most frequently, the Star. I have also spent time at Business Report - a business supplement to many of the Independent Newspapers titles - and Moneyweb where I worked as a financial journalist.
I would like to start writing for different formats to broaden my spectrum. In time, I would like to be able to do anything, from writing scripts and marketing content to financial reports, eventually, non-fiction novels.
