Charles King was a full-time freelance journalist and writer before taking up an academic post, in 2013, as a journalism lecturer at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa. He was previously media relations manager for MultiChoice Africa and an account director at Ogilvy PR (Jhb), the editor of two magazines, and published and edited his own newspaper, for which he received a 'special mention' by Professor Anton Harber at the 2011 Taco Kuiper Investigative Journalism Awards. Charles has a honours degree in English Literature, an MA in Journalism & Media Studies, both from Wits University. He's currently a doctoral candidate in the Centre for Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town. Charles teaches news writing, online media, advanced and specialist reporting. He's especially interested in teaching others how to report climate change, Africa, and sexual minorities. His writing has been published in AFRIDIASPORA, the Enkare Review, and he won the 2017 Koffi Addo Writivism Prize for Non-fiction. He continues to write and freelance in what's left of his spare time.
