I've been a journalist for 23 years working for all the major newspaper groups in the country. I've now opted for self-employment. Career highlights include working for Sapa as a presidential correspondent during Madiba's presidency and traveling extensively in this capacity, as well as my years as Group Political Editor for Independent Newspapers (under the then ownership of Tony O' Reilly). I was in charge of the political coverage for 16 of the group's morning, afternoon and weekend titles. I've been the editor of two daily newspapers and one weekly: The Mercury, The Witness and more recently the Mail and Guardian. I am a member of the SA National Editors' Forum and have served on council for many years. I've served on Sanef's management committee as secretary-general and I'm the current treasurer-general. My fields of interest & expertise include current affairs, social justice and the law, particularly human rights and constitutional law, as well as media freedom issues at home and throughout the continent. I have mentored several journalists over the years and believe that media companies have scored an own goal by cutting back on training and closing their internship programmes and cadet schools.
