Good day, my name is Lorena Gastaldi. I am a third generation Italian living in South Africa with a rather large and loud family. I spent my entire school career at St. Mary's Diocesan School for Girls in Pretoria where I excelled in English, History, on the hockey field and in many leadership roles. After high school, I was all set to attend my choice of universities, but felt I needed to get away and learn to be independent. I was lucky to get a last minute job as a gap student at the very prestigious Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England. I spent a year there, loving every minute. Being there really intensified my love of literature as some of the school’s alumni include Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and W. H. Auden. Stonyhurst is also where J. R. R. Tolkien penned The Hobbit. I was sad to leave, but excited to get my studies started.
Upon my return, I began my Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Cape Town with a triple Major in English Literature, Film Theory and Art History. Once I had completed my degree I went on to complete my Diploma in Journalism at Varsity College Rondebosch. During my time at Varsity College I acted as the Copy Editor for our student magazine Toast. At this time, I too was offered an internship at Condé Nast House & Garden Magazine. During my two month internship, I had two feature articles published.
Once my diploma was completed I began freelancing for a Cape Town based PR firm, Storybook Communications. It was here that I learnt how to handle many social media accounts, how to write press releases, organise events and communicate with media.
At the moment I am freelancing for two companies, Social Animal and Corporate Canvas. For both companies, I work on the food side of things doing recipe development, food styling, food photography and running social media accounts.
