I have been a print journalist since 1995.
As a reporter I have covered general news, business and features. I also have solid editing and production experience.
I have worked full time for a variety of publications in South Africa and the UK, both daily and weekly, consumer and trade press.
For much of the noughties I earned my crust as a freelance editor, serving corporate, NGO and local government clients. This included a seven-year spell when I spent sx days a month producing a fortnightly tabloid for the eThekwini Municipality. Apart from redesigning the publication, I was involved in all stages and aspects of the production process. Work included layout, picture editing, copy editing, rewriting and some training and news editing.
Also during this period I put together a number of 60-plus page reports and magazines for a variety of clients. I was generally contracted to handle the entire process – from commissioning photographers and illustrators to writing copy and laying out pages to print-ready PDF stage.
I served as deputy news editor and long spells as acting news editor at the Daily News from May 2011 to November 2017, when I applied for voluntary retrenchment.
People say kind things about my copy editing – accurate and reliable – and when it comes to writing I am happy to sing my own praises: brief when I need to be; flair to spare if required.
I am a dab hand at layout: fluent in QuarkXpress and InDesign; can speak a bit of Photoshop.
Reasonably proficient with a camera.
Usually available at short-notice – but will consider short-term contracts.
