I have a BA Honours degree in English Literature from Rhodes University, with a course on Journalism & Media Studies and a History major. I worked for Maskew Miller Longman for nine years (1986–1994) and resigned as a Senior Editor to start my career as a freelancer. I have worked as a freelance editor, proofreader and writer for over 22 years, and earn all my income from freelancing.
My core skills are editing – copy, content, structural and stylistic; detailed heavy editing; reorganising of material; accessible English; proofreading (hard copy/on-screen); writing and rewriting/overwriting; research; and design input. I work in the following fields: English (language and literature); humanities, social & integrated studies; geography/environment/conservation; history, psychology, life orientation; business (marketing/management); health/medical/HIV and AIDS; general interest (sport, design & décor, self-help); child and teen issues; school readiness; teacher training; and adult basic education and training (ABET).
I am a member of the English Academy of Southern Africa and of the Professional Editors’ Guild (PEG). I have done work for @Communications, Awareness Publishing, Heinemann, Liberty, Macmillan Educational, Maskew Miller Longman, MD Publications, Oxford University Press, Penguin Books and Wits University Press, among many other clients. I have attended numerous courses on aspects of copy editing and proofreading over the years, and a course on mentoring conducted by PEG. I worked as a mentor (by invitation) for PEG from October 2012 – March 2014.
