Experience

Having been born and educated in England (BA Hons, 1983-1986, and Masters in History at Magdalen College, Oxford), I worked as an investment manager for Baring Asset Management in London before doing a postgraduate certificate of education at the Roehampton Institute. I worked in London schools for 5 years, finishing as the deputy head of a school in London before moving to South Africa in 1995. In Johannesburg, I worked initially in a school before shifting to part time/freelance work to suit family needs. I worked variously as the office manager for The Economist Newspaper and The Telegraph, and as a computer software trainer in Word, Excel and PowerPoint for a training company. After moving to Cape Town in 1999, I continued to work as a freelance writer/editor and trainer.

I have co-authored two series of Grade 4 to 7 English textbooks, readers and teacher guides for the SA English Home Language curriculum for Oxford University Press (SA), a set of year 4 to 6 English First Language textbooks for Cambride University Press (UK) for the CIE curriculum aimed at the interantional market, for which I am currently working on a digital component, and eight Read & Respond study guides for Scholastic UK. I lectured part-time in the Professional Communications Studies unit in the Engineering faculty at the University of Cape Town (UCT) until 2006, and in 2016 was a contributing author to the 4th edition of Professional Communication (Juta). From 2009 to 2015, I co-convened legal writing courses for the UCT Law@Work unit and have continued to work with one of the UCT law professors on plain language legal writing projects. I have worked since 2006 at the UCT Staff Learning Centre giving various courses in writing, working with Word templates project management and more recently Excel. Concurrently I have editied over 30 academic theses and dissertations.

For many years, I consulted on report writing skills  and developing templates for the Special Investigating Unit and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (NPA) through which I developed a specialism in corruption rerporting. I have exanded this work into private sector forensic report writing and editing, while consulting to a wide range of clients on all matters writing – from mentoring, training and editing to redesigning reporting systems and writing copy. For the last 15 years, therefore, the majority of my income has been generated through writing, editing, training and consulting.
