I am an individual with a passion for the English language and I have been freelancing as a proofreader and editor since 2005.
I worked as a freelance columnist for News24 for three years. I was also a blogger for many years. I work with any material that goes out for public consumption, both online and hard copy.
I proofread and edit theses, manuscripts (both novels and non-fiction across all genres), marketing and advertising material, film scripts, annual financial statements, investigation reports, and any other material in English.
I use Microsoft Word to edit documents, using the track changes feature and liaise with my clients closely throughout the project. I try to keep my clients in the loop about changes and suggestions I make, both as comments within the actual documents so that they have a holistic perception of the process and feel part of it.
I am passionate about working with young South African writers as I feel they have a voice that needs to be heard.
I also do translation work, from English to Afrikaans and vice-versa.

REFERENCE LETTER - March 2017
I was referred to Colleen Figg by a fellow author whose debut novel – Life out of the Ordinary – Colleen had proofread.
When I contacted her she handled my query with professionalism and clarity. I was sold. So I sent my manuscript for the updated version of my first book, In Her Fall Rose a Nation, for Colleen to work on.
I was impressed by her contributions and expertise on the use of language. She put herself not only in my shoes as the author, but also in the reader’s shoes. In so doing, she was able to amplify my voice to the right volume for the reader.
Colleen does not impose her corrections (though they are correct) on the author. She questions and suggests changes with humility, leaving the ball entirely in your court to decide, yet giving you the reasonable knowledge to apply your mind. In other words, she unlocks the door but lets you open it.
In an industry that is financially discriminatory of independent writers, Colleen’s services are a great relief for most writers whose pockets are just a fist deep.
So, for anybody who is looking for affordable quality proofreading, I forward the name of Colleen Figg with utmost confidence.
