I am a seasoned communications professional with 25+ years’ experience in a broad range of industries – from banking, aviation and road freight, to mining and public health. I currently run my own consultancy, Leonie Selvan Communications (LSC).
One of my major strengths lies in translating an organisation’s business plan and strategic objectives into an effective communication strategy – for both internal and external audiences. I develop successful communication channels and tools for clients from concept to production and have extensive experience writing, editing and proofreading a wide range of communication material.
Much of the writing and editing I do involves synthesising complex and technical information to make it more accessible to a broad range of stakeholders. I am creative and innovative – yet practical, with excellent writing skills and an eye for detail. I am highly effective in developing strong working relationships with clients.
Examples of internal communication initiatives include researching and writing a monthly update for the CEO of a listed financial services organisation, writing for and producing in-house publications and newsletters, intranets, conceptualising and scripting a bi-weekly internal TV programme for staff, as well as induction and infographic videos.
Examples of external communications include writing and producing annual reports and training material, and conceptualising and developing content for websites. I have a core of designers that I have worked with for many years to creatively convey key messages that engage the reader. I also have solid media experience.
Over the course of my career I have conducted research on the effects of communication interventions and climate studies for South African Airways, Liberty Life and MMI.
As a PEPFAR partner I implemented several HIV/AIDS-related projects including designing and producing the national training curriculum for healthcare workers on prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) (2005, updated 2010), and a peer educator guide on sexual reproductive health (SRH) for the National Department of Health (NDOH) on behalf of CDC (2010). I was involved in South Africa’s first counselling and testing week ‘A Man Knows’ in 2008, which took place across five provinces and aimed at increasing awareness and testing rates among men aged 25-35. My role was to co-ordinate and generate corporate support for the project, overall project management and to produce a final report, evaluating the project. I also edited and produced reports on family planning and basic antenatal and postnatal care, gender-based violence, and key populations.
Clients include the EU-funded Stop Stockouts Project, Auto&General, Health24 and the Rural Health Advocacy Project.
