Kay Johnstone Safrea

Kay has been an editor, writer and proofreader for a number of years since starting her career as a medical journalist in London, UK. This sparked a particular interest in the fields of medical and health publishing. Since moving to South Africa many years ago, she has gained wide experience in various areas of publishing and public relations, both as a permanent staff member and as a freelancer, including being contracted to write and edit publications for a prominent mining house, editing academic papers, and serving as press officer at the University of the Witwatersrand. Most recently, she was chief copyeditor and writer on several consumer magazine titles at a major media company, and wrote a weekly health article for a popular women’s magazine for several years.

Away from work, she is deeply committed to animal welfare, and served in various voluntary roles with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) for several years, including as a director on the board, as the PRO and fundraiser, as a qualified senior inspector, and as chair of her local society. As well as spending time with her animals, she enjoys playing Scrabble, tackling crossword puzzles, and listening to music – particularly opera.
