Brandon James is a graphic designer and creative problem-solver, who sees design as a means of communication and a means to appropriately build and deliver brand integrity. Based in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa, he has a Diploma in Media and Graphic Design.

Please tell us more about what you do and how long you’ve been a freelancer.

I have been freelancing since high school but only officially started my business “Branded Design Co” in September of 2019. My work consists of graphic design projects related to print media, corporate identity and marketing collateral. Examples of these include logos, business cards, websites, social media marketing, book covers, annual reports and much more.

What does a day in your life look like? Where/how do you find inspiration?

My workflow centers around a “to-do” list. I have lists for work as well as for my personal life and goals. My day usually starts with consulting my list to wrap my head around the day’s tasks. I aim to actively start working on projects by 8:00. I am quite flexible with my working hour – some days choosing to work later than others. However, I am the type of person that likes to get things done as soon as I can.

I get inspiration from many places, these days they are mostly digital sources. Art/Design Youtubers, podcasts, books and of course, the trusty Pinterest. Some of my favourite artists/designers are Aaron James Draplin and Ten Hundred.

What advice do you have for other freelancers?

Be diligent in your work and people will take notice. I think it’s also very important to strive to be learning and improving constantly. Try to set aside time to learn something new, something that interests you. It may relate to your work, but it could also be completely unrelated (read a book, watch a movie, go for a walk). Make sure that you take time for yourself.

How long have you been a Safrean, and why are you a member of Safrea?

I joined Safrea in 2019 and it has proven to be so valuable in terms of networking and gaining resources to aid in running my own business as a freelancer.

What is your work/life motto?

I’m not sure that I have a particular motto that I live or work by, but I would like to think that I try to remain calm and optimistic in everything that comes my way, so I’ll share these scriptures:

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” – Matthew 6:34
