Nonkululeko Nxumalo-Moselesele is an introvert who loves the outdoors and basking in nature’s beauty. She is also an avid reader who enjoys being curled up on the couch reading a good book.

Tell us more about what you do and how long you’ve been a freelancer.

I’m a writer and I’ve been freelancing for about two years now. I started off writing CVs and other career documents for clients on various online platforms. Currently, I write articles for a prominent university on a freelance basis. I still write CVs, however, I now do it on a part-time basis. I’ve also written other material that has been published on several platforms. My passion lies in writing fiction. I have a flash fiction that was published in an international literary journal, I have a short story forthcoming that will be published in an LGBTQIA book and I’m currently working on another short story that will be available soon.

What does a day in your life look like?

I always try to start my day as early as possible. I wake up at 05:00 and have some quiet time by myself before I get my daughter ready for school at 06:00. I’m also a part-time pig farmer, so after my daughter leaves for school, I feed my pigs and make sure the pen is clean. At around 09:00 I’m at my desk, in front of my laptop with my freelancer hat on.

Where/how do you find inspiration?

I read a lot and I enjoy listening to other people’s stories, be it their life stories or something that happened to them – that’s where I get most of my inspiration from. Sometimes it’s something that happened to me and how I felt at that time, and other times, a story just pops into my head like an epiphany.

What advice do you have for other freelancers?

I have found that building a network helps a great deal. I have wanted to give up so many times, but connecting with like-minded people and colleagues made me want to stick around longer. Also, discipline is key but remember to take a break now and then. Your office is in your home, so it’s very easy to get carried away with work. Maintain that work-life-balance.

How long have you been a Safrean, and why are you a member of Safrea?

I’ve been with Safrea for almost two years. I became a member because, as I said, building a network is vital. I was new to freelancing and wanted a community of people that could assist me in this new career. I wanted to connect with people with more experience than what I had, people I could learn from, like- minded professionals that could guide me and connect me with opportunities and perhaps more connections. And Safrea gives me exactly that and more.

What is your work/life motto?

Work towards growth, in every aspect of your life. You cannot be the same person you were a year ago. Oprah Winfrey once said, “We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.”
