Sam Lee Hill is a wordsmith, SEO copywriter and blogger from Gauteng who firmly believes that “copywriters rule the world.” As the founder of SLH Copywriting, Sam loves nothing more than telling the story of various brands well.

Describe yourself in two sentences.

A copywriter who is great at writing about everything, but herself. Has very strong opinions about commas, puns and the use of the Papyrus font (easy with the commas, “yes” to the puns, hell “no” to Papyrus).

Please tell us more about what you do and how long you’ve been a freelancer.

I’ve been freelancing on and off since I was in university (2015). I left my corporate job to freelance full-time and haven’t looked back since. As a recovered Jack-of-all trades, my main focus now is copywriting and SEO content writing.

What does a day in your life look like?

All freelancers know that every day is different. In the morning I’m my most productive so I prioritise deep work. Afternoons are reserved for lower-energy tasks and creative projects. I try to make time for three things in my daily schedule: client work, business admin or marketing, and something centred around self-improvement.

Where/how do you find inspiration?

By reading everything and anything — the more out of my usual scope, the better. LinkedIn (when you follow the right people) can also be a treasure trove of trending topics, relevant industry news and valuable insights.

What advice do you have for other freelancers?

Plan and prepare for lows while you’re riding the highs.

How long have you been a Safrean, and why are you a member of Safrea?

I became a Safrean in October 2022 so I’m still a newbie. I joined because I wanted a sense of community in this often-lonely industry.

What is your work/life motto?

It’s my life’s mission to emulate this quote from The Importance of Being Earnest (by Oscar Wilde), “If I am occasionally a little over-dressed, I make up for it by being always immensely over-educated.” (It’s a work in progress.)
